A holiday sanity boost to save you from the summer scramble
(Yes - We said summer. Think of it as a gift to your Future Self).
If you’re a parent, December isn’t so much a month as it is a full-contact sport. So yes — thinking about summer camp right now feels… unhinged.
But hear us out.
Every year, January arrives like a tinsel-covered freight train, and suddenly every parent in California is sprinting toward summer camp registration at the exact same time. Weeks fill up fast. Emails get missed. Panic sets in. And somewhere, someone is shouting “HOW IS IT SUMMER PLANNING SEASON ALREADY?!”
We don’t want that for you.
Which is why we made this:
The EDMO Holiday Survival + Summer Prep Guide A tiny gift for Present You and Future You — the version of yourself who would very much like to avoid a meltdown while trying to make breakfast.
Inside, you’ll find:
Real strategies to reduce December stress (that have nothing to do with summer) Quick, tangible wins to help your household run smoother A few parent-approved sanity savers And just enough summer prep to make January feel calm, clear, and completely handle-able
Take a breath.
Take what you need.
And let’s get you through December — without losing track of your water bottle, your patience, or your Future Self’s sanity.
PART 1: Holiday Survival Essentials Real strategies to help reduce stress, reclaim time, and stay grounded during December.
1. The Three-Item Rule A small shift that reduces overwhelm immediately, because somehow writing a list of 27 things feels productive… right up until you have to actually do 27 things in one day.
Holiday to-do lists get out of hand fast. The trick is to keep your active list to three items at a time. Make your full holiday list — then put most of it in a reserve list you can pull from later. Select three items to focus on. That’s it, just three.
When you finish your three items, pull the next priorities from your “reserve list” where everything else lives safely (and doesn’t get forgotten). No matter what, keep your “active list” to just three things.
This helps you stay focused, reduces decision fatigue, and keeps the season manageable without losing track of what matters. Suddenly your list feels doable and your brain can breathe again.
2. The Gift Cabinet Reset A 10-minute task that saves money and sanity, preventing you from discovering on December 26 that you already owned four rolls of tape, two packs of tags, and the exact gift you panic-bought.
Before shopping, do a quick sweep of places where holiday items tend to “hide”:
Coat closet Random shopping bags Last year’s wrapping bin The top shelf where you “put things to remember” Parents often rediscover gift bags, wrapping rolls, forgotten stocking stuffers, duplicate gifts, and supplies they didn’t need to repurchase. This quick reset prevents unnecessary errands, which saves you time and money.
3. The Quiet Hour Swap A gift of time for overwhelmed parents
Trade one uninterrupted hour with a partner, co-parent, friend, or neighbor. Each person gets 60 minutes of true off-duty time.
Use it to wrap gifts, take a walk, rest, or enjoy silence, whatever helps you reset. A single predictable hour of breathing room can transform an entire week AND it gives you a twinkling light at the end of the holiday tunnel.
Because nothing says “holiday spirit” like locking yourself in a bedroom for 60 glorious minutes of uninterrupted silence.
4. The One-and-Done Holiday Box A simple system that stops scavenger hunts. Imagine a world where you don’t yell “WHERE’S THE TAPE?!” every 2 minutes. This is that world.
Designate one box for everything holiday-related: Cards, tape, receipts, ribbons, scissors, tags. No more hunting for the tape mid-wrap or re-buying what you already own.
5. The Emergency Activities Folder Your secret weapon for school break week. Kids have 12+ hours of energy, and you have… not that.
Prepare a small folder or bag with low-effort activities for your kid:
Coloring pages Sticker sheets A glue stick + construction paper A simple STEM activity (like “dancing raisins”) This buys 20–45 minutes of quiet when you need to finish a task, prep a meal, simply take a breather and hide in the bathroom.
PART 2: 5-Minute Summer Prep (For December) A short, low-stress checklist that helps you avoid the January scramble and lock in summer before the good weeks disappear and the panic sets in.
1. Add One Date to Your Calendar January 6 — EDMO Summer Registration Opens Early Bird savings: $50 off per week.
This single reminder eliminates the “I forgot!” stress that hits families every year.
2. Choose Your “Need Weeks” Think of these as your “this is the week I will lose my mind if we don’t have camp” weeks. You don’t have to plan the whole summer; just identify 2–3 weeks you know you’ll need for childcare, work coverage, or a buffer between travel and school schedules.
These are usually:
The week school ends Fourth of July week One or two high-pressure work week One “we need a break” week With everything gathered, picking your summer camp weeks in January becomes quick, clear, and frustration-free.
3. Create a Summer Planning Folder Digital or paper — your future self will thank you, because this one step saves you time, stress, and last-minute scrambling when booking summer camp in January. Because digging through old emails, screenshots, and text threads in January is a universal parental nightmare.
Store in one place:
School calendar Your work deadlines Last year’s notes about what your kiddo loved Vacation dates Sitter/grandparent/family travel plans
This makes choosing dates in January fast and frustration-free.
4. Ask Your Kid One Question A simple way to choose themes:“What’s something you want to learn or try next summer?”
Kids usually give you a clue right away:
Build cool gadgets or engineering contraptions Mix wild science experiments Create big, bold art Design games or write stories Explore nature and animals Try coding or robotics Or make something with tools, gears, or everyday materials Whatever they say almost always points you to the right category of EDMO themes. No deep planning or research required.
5. Confirm You're on the EDMO Email List This ensures you get:
Theme and schedule announcements Reminders for Early Bird registration Location-specific updates Registration links Parents who miss Early Bird almost always miss the email reminders. Learning camp opened yesterday is a special kind of panic reserved for parents who somehow weren’t on the list (don’t say we didn’t warn you). Sign up today!
6. Block Ten Minutes on January 6 Add a short time block for enrollment. If you don’t block the time, you will try to register while someone is yelling “WHERE ARE MY SHOES?!” and no one deserves that. You’ll breeze through registration without rushing or trying to negotiate with the “shoe monster” who lives in your kiddo’s closet.
A small detail that removes friction and saves time when enrollment opens. Because scrolling through 900 emails is not how anyone wants to start their morning.
Whether you’re a family looking for an engaging program for your kiddo or a school or district looking for a trusted partner, EDMO is here to help create meaningful learning experiences beyond the school day.
